"Wall of Stones"

Wall of Stones

I built a dry stone wall around my children.
to tether or anchor them in, save them from this world
of beauty and disgrace. A billion
stars could not be as bright as they whirl
and dance to the music of discordant notes.

They are safe for now but
they feel rhythms from beyond the walls, want boats
want to leave, want to see what is above, beyond, try to cut
around the stones. They have begun to take
them away. Each child digs at a certain spot,
hoping I don’t see. Soon they will leave, for their own sakes,
leave their colorful and soft cots
leave without me, escape from their prison with my crumbled
stones out of order, scattered and humbled
